Infertile. Not exactly what you want to hear the doctor saying to you.
For me, hearing those words were like a slam to the chest. We hadn't even been trying for a baby. I was simply getting all of my preconception blood tests so that when we were ready, my body would be in good health to conceive. But it turns out that some of my results were abnormal. In particular, my AMH levels. (I'm going to do a specific blog post on AMH and why it is an important test to get for any woman looking to start a family in their mid 20's. ) Basically, I don't have many eggs left in my ovaries.
And so began the craziest two weeks that I've ever experienced in the medical world! I got a subsequent appointment with my GP to further discuss my results and was immediately referred to an IVF specialist to get my eggs harvested and frozen as soon as possible. I jumped straight into research, from the best IVF clinic in Perth to what I can do in the meantime to improve my egg quality. While there are so many books written, papers developed and research done - infertility is still such an unknown.
This is why I've decided to document our journey to parenthood with this blog. Knowing that there is someone else experiencing the same thing - feeling the same emotions, can be comforting. I also want to help others to take control of their fertility journey and to educate women about what they can do to get ahead. It's not an easy time. But you're not alone.
So stay tuned for our journey - the good, the bad and the ugly!
